When I look at Mondrian’s work, I am truly inspired. The balance of color and the harmony of the lines make Mondrian’s works of art at the top of our list to study. Piet Mondrian was born in 1872. He was a Dutch painter and was part of the Neoplasticism movement – a movement that did not have representational forms – no landscapes here. No portraits. No still life paintings. Mondrian’s vertical and horizontal lines make up grids that are filled with primary colors, black and white. They are bold, bright, clean and precise. Mondrian said that he “constructs lines and color combinations on a flat surface in order to express general beauty with the utmost awareness”. It is true. His paintings stop you in your tracks when you see them at museums, study them in books and or hang the prints in your rooms.

What can we learn from observing Mondrian’s work? This approach had not been seen before. I see that his work is a reminder to take risks….depart from what is already “out there” and invent your own style! One of Mondrian’s most famous works of art is titled Broadway Boogie-Woogie, hanging in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The boogie woogie music was one of Mondrian’s favorite to dance to …it really looks like the lines and shapes are dancing!

What can you create that is new? From drawing to music to writing. – invent something new like Piet Mondrian did….something we have never seen before. Fun!
